Art therapy as a method involves the use of certain techniques aimed at teaching a person to see a certain meaning in his visual products and to realize its connections with the content of his inner world and experience, as well as to develop the ability to conduct an "internal dialogue", introspection and reflection.

Modern psychology continues its development, and more and more specialists in this field use means of therapy and counseling, which are not only safe for the client, but can also be used in the maximum number of directions with simultaneous combination with each other. Among such areas we can include therapy with fairy tales and games, bibliotherapy, creative self-expression therapy, music therapy and more.

Most often, such techniques are used in working with children, but they can also be used in other areas, for example, in working with people with disabilities or people who have experienced stress, trauma, violence.

The most common way of such activity is art therapy, which is a direction of therapy with the help of art or creative self-expression.

This method provides an opportunity to experiment with people's feelings and emotions, provides an opportunity for diagnosis and therapy at the level of symbolism. Art therapy acts as an instrument of progressive and very effective psychological assistance, it contributes to the formation of a mentally healthy personality on the one hand, and on the other hand, it gives an opportunity to develop creative abilities.

The main distinguishing feature of this method of therapeutic psychological influence can be considered the use of non-verbal contact mechanisms. This is the main method of transmitting information to other people. Within the framework of art therapy, clients can be aware of their problems, find optimal ways to resolve them, makes it possible to form a positive attitude to the world around them and to each individual, forms adequate ways to respond in situations of stress and non-standard, this has a positive impact on the personality as a whole, forms sufficiently stable prerequisites for the development of professional and interpersonal contacts.

Art therapy is actively used in both group and individual work. The most important types of art therapy are fairy tale therapy, creative self-expression therapy, isotherapy or drawing therapy, reading therapy and more.

It is for this reason that art therapy is currently actively growing, professional training of specialists continues. Art therapy is actively used in preschool children's educational institutions, schools, specialized centers for helping people who have been subjected to violence and find themselves in difficult life situations.

The practical aspects of using art therapy are related to group and individual counseling. In individual counseling, art therapy can act as an independent element of the psychologist's work, as well as an included component.

Most often, elements of art therapy are used in individual work with children or in the case when verbal consultation can have a negative impact on clients.

The main stages of art therapy in counseling include - drawing, discussion of the drawing, the formation of a problem resolution together with psychologists.

In the process of individual counseling, the client may be asked to depict problems and mechanisms for their resolution.

An example of the most striking group work can be the activity of psychologists of secondary professional and higher educational institutions with students. Here art therapy is used within the framework of creating masks and drawing fairy tales, telling fairy tales with the help of music and theatricalization.
