The task of increasing the level of independence of cadets and the role of their independent educational activities in mastering a foreign language follows from the concept of student autonomy and autonomous self-directed learning. The essence of this concept lies in the development of the personality of future military specialists, the formation of educational skills in mastering a foreign language and the ability to independently (autonomously) manage their educational activities both in a specific educational situation and in the context of the ultimate goals of learning a foreign language.

We agree with the Russian scientist-methodologist N.F. Koryakovtseva, who highlights the main characteristics of students' autonomy in educational activities according to the following components and extrapolates this concept to organize independently the work of cadets in the process of preparing for competitions in the English language: 1) educational competence; 2) the position of business activity, which means the ability to initiate educational activity; 3) the position of constructive and creative activity, which means orientation to a personal educational product; 4) the position of reflexive self-assessment, which means the ability to reflexive self-assessment of goals.

Thus, we can give the following definition of the independent work of cadets in a higher military school - this is a method of continuous education and a simultaneous means of individualizing the learning process in the form of frontal, group and individual educational activities, which can be performed both in the classroom and in extracurricular time and as a basis which is supposed to be the interaction of the teacher and students, which is of a partner and parity nature, their dialogical co-creativity, characterized by great activity in the course of cognitive processes and serving as a means of increasing the efficiency of the learning process and preparing students for independent replenishment of their knowledge throughout their lives.

The effect of the independent work of a cadet can be obtained only when it is organized and implemented in the educational process as an integral system that permeates all stages of training at a university

The content of the cadets' independent work is of a two-sided nature. On the one hand, this is a set of educational and practical tasks that a cadet must complete in the learning process, the object of his activity, which corresponds to communicative competence. On the other hand, it is a way of a cadet's activity in fulfilling an appropriate educational theoretical or practical task, which corresponds to educational competence.

So, when performing any type of independent work, the cadet must go through the following stages:

1. Determination of the goal of independent work;

2. Concretization of the cognitive task;

3. Self-assessment of readiness for independent work to solve a given or selected task.

Independent work completes the tasks of all types of educational work. No knowledge, if it is not backed up by independent activity, can become the real property of a personality.
