Upbringing has always been and still is one of the most important aspects of any society development. Due to well-known historical and political reasons this aspect of youth upbringing is the most topical. It is much written and spoken about, but, unfortunately the results do not always coincide with the expectations of the society. There are many motives for this. One of the basic is the reconsideration of simple human values, which has taken place in our society lately. Some people are not able to adjust to the new conditions and circumstances. So, instead of dynamic life attitude – they live for the day, some have become languid, others – covetous.

There are many definitions of patriotism, but they all exhibit love for homeland and willingness of the people to be a benefit to the native land.

The aim of this research is to draw the attention of the society (including the pedagogical) to the vast possibilities of patriotic upbringing at the lessons of foreign languages. Potentially everyone agrees to that, no one denies it is objective reality, but in practical terms, things are not so smooth and simple.

The main reasons for such circumstances are:

common lack of professional competence;

educational tutorials selection and organization;

ill-equipped facilities;

motivation deficiency (both teachers’ and students’).

Let us have a closer look at all of them.

By competence we mean the core values – knowledge, expertise, mastery of the subject and its methods and active patriotic citizenship. All these qualities combined, patriotic upbringing will prosper.

What concerns educational tutorials, there are many different ones nowadays, but if we compare, say, three of them, we shall see that they are not intended for today students’ schooling level and do not have the correctly organized material to attain the goals of patriotic development. The majority of them are poorly and improperly objective in the selection of the information about foreign countries (in our case these are English speaking countries).

Another reason for patriotic students’ development being non-systematic and consequently ineffective is ill-equipped facilities of educational institutions. Not to waste time and make the lesson more patriotism-oriented one should watch an authentic subject video, or listen to a genuine audio, which is unfortunately still unavailable at some institutions.

As the enveloping all the mentioned ones, we must note the problem of motivation deficiency as a great drawback of the education system in general.

All these problems are interrelated and must be solved in an integrated manner to increase the quality of upbringing and education.
