Cognitive linguistics is a branch of linguistics that is rapidly developing in modern science. She studies language as a cognitive mechanism that plays a role in language coding and transformation.

The goal of cognitive linguistics is to understand how the processes of perception, categorization, classification and understanding of the world are carried out, how knowledge is accumulated, and what systems provide various types of information activities.

Cognitive linguistics does not fit into the framework of one science, but lies at the intersection of several disciplines, such as psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, ethnolinguistics, ethnopsycholinguistics, biolinguistics, jurislinguistics, computational linguistics, political linguistics, as well as linguogeography, linguistic anthropology, etc.

The interdisciplinarity of cognitive linguistics is expressed in the active involvement of information and experimental data from other sciences: primarily from psychology, but also from philosophy, neurophysiology, sociology, political science, ethnography, the theory of artificial intelligence, etc. The defining role in this complex, however, belongs to linguistics, and the greatest contribution to the formation and development of this field was made and continues to be made by linguists.

The term cognitive, borrowed into the Russian language from English (cognitive), goes back to the Latin and then to the Greek roots associated with the concepts of cognition, knowledge, thinking. Researchers who were at the origins of cognitive linguistics proclaimed its fundamental principle of the relationship between language and cognition (from the English cognition). At the same time, cognition encompasses in the aggregate the process of achieving knowledge (i.e., cognition) and its result (i.e., knowledge).

The emergence of cognitive linguistics was due not only to the history of linguistics, but also to the development of cognitive research and the formation of the so-called cognitive science.

The origin of cognitivism is usually attributed to the 1960s and associated with the desire to overcome behaviorism as a methodology of scientific research and return mind to the science of man. Trying to define the subject of cognitive science, E. S. Kubryakova writes that it is a science "about knowledge and cognition, about the results of perception of the world and subject-cognitive activity of people and form the basis of mental, or cognitive, processes".

Thus, we found out that cognitive linguistics proclaims the need, as well as gives us the key to understanding the mechanisms of perception and understanding of the world, knowledge of which is necessary for the successful development of science and all aspects of human life.
