V.V. Vinogradov is one of the most important Russian and global scientists, who had written more than 200 works. [3] He is known as a soviet linguist, literary scholar, member of the Academy of Science of USSR. [2]

He was born in 1894 in Zaraysk, but had left his hometown and had moved to Petrograd. There, in 1917, he had graduated from Historico-Philological and Archeological Institutes. For the biggest part of his life – which is about 50 years - Victor Vladimirovich Vinogradov had been teaching: in Leningrad State University (1920-1929), Moscow State University (1930-1969) and other Soviet scientific institutions. [2]

In 1940s-1950s the school of Vinogradov appeared. Vinogradov’s followers were united by the general understanding of the language nature and the methodology of his study. According to the Vinogradov’s theory, on the one hand the core of Linguistics is a word and on the other – a text in all its complexity. [4]

The scientist submitted new systematization of Russian Linguistics. It was divided into:

historical and linguistic studies, which include Dialectology, Historical Grammar, History of Language, History of Literary Language and History of Belles Language;

Stylistics;

studies, which describe current literary language – vocabulary, grammar, word-formation, phraseology, phonetics;

a Belles language and writers’ parlance study;

the history of philological studies. [4]

Many aspects of this systematization were not just accepted then but are still used.

V.V. Vinogradov had been studying all these fields of Linguistics. In some of them he had maintained and developed the ideas of his colleagues and predecessors and some of them he introduced himself, for example, the History of Russian literary language as the History of styles. [1]

Vinogradov had paid a lot of his attention to the language and style of fundamental Russian writers, such as Gogol, Dostoevsky, Pushkin, Lermontov, Akhmatova and others. He had published an impressive amount of articles and books devoted to the style of particular authors and notes on Stylistics in general. In them he had examined not only representatives of Russian literature but also works of Russian scientists and even politicians, for example, of I.V. Stalin.

Among the scientists of Vinogradov’s school can be distinguished V.G. Kostomarov, V.P. Grigoryev, A.D. Grigoryeva, M.N. Kozhina and others, who have deepened the study of Stylistics, Poetics and Language of belles. The most important problems of Lexicology and Lexicography had been studied by such famous linguists as Ozhegov, Sorokin, Shvedova, etc. On the basis of Vinogradov’s ideas had been written many grammar textbooks.

There are several common features that characterize the research method of the scientists of Vinogradov’s school:

they analyse linguistic phenomena in their relationship with other phenomena;

they pay attention to the functional and stylistic distribution of linguistic phenomena;

they study the phenomena as regards “diachronic synchrony”, what is an understanding of synchrony as conditionally stopped aspect of language development and analysis of language phenomena within the boundaries of historical background;

they work only with lively and rich material, which they extract themselves from all the necessary sources. [4]

In conclusion, I would like to say that nowadays Victor Vladimirovich Vinogradov is considered to be one of the most important Russian linguists. Moreover, his studies had influenced on and had been developed by many other famous scientists. And even after a century after the beginning of Vinogradov’s academic career, his study still encourages students and scientists to research.
