Oxford University is located in the English city of Oxford and it is one of the most prestigious and the most ancient higher educational establishment of the world. Often it take a leading position in the world rankings of universities and it took first place in the world in “The World University Ranking” 2016 and 2017.

The exact date of the founding of the University is unknown, but it has legend that the institution was founded by Alfred the Great in 872, who held a long debate with the monks on various scientific topics. Besides there is information that the educational process was in full swing as early as 1096, but information about lectures, seminars and practical classes remained in small quantities.

The arrangement University of Oxford resembles a small state within which, addition to the main University, there is 38 Oxford Colleges and 6 Permanent Private Hall. Oxford Colleges have not a division into specialties, students can study in any faculty. Each has its own dining room, bar, library, recreation room and dormitories. The University is also home to churches, shops, cafes, pubs, restaurants, theatres, museums and libraries. University of Oxford has its own edition, where the world-famous Oxford dictionary is printed. There is also an arboretum and the oldest Botanical garden in England.

Exams, most lectures and laboratory classes are organized centrally, and colleges conduct individual classes with students and seminars. Nowadays more than 20 thousand students study at Oxford, about a quarter of them are foreign. Women in Oxford began to accept only in the 1920s, but in the 1970s was abolished separate education. Oxford uses a unique system of tutoring. It means that over each student is established personal custody specialist in the chosen specialty.

University of Oxford offers training in almost all possible areas and specialties for undergraduate and graduate studies: from theology and Oriental studies to genetics and IT. All faculties are grouped into four major areas: Humanities, social Sciences, mathematics, physics and life Sciences, and medicine. In no scientific field does Oxford usually fall below the tenth line of international rankings. The most popular majors at Oxford are law, design, biology, Biomedicine, Economics, history, it, Humanities, chemistry. The academic year at Oxford lasts from October to the end of June.

Admission to the University Commission conducted every year during October and November, when applicants can bring papers and write applications for admission to Oxford. The learning process begins after a year. For admission to the University or one of the colleges each applicant obliged to send a package of papers to a special British reception service. This state structure created in order to consider applications from applicants. The applicant does not have to immediately choose a College: you can submit an open application the results of which the University will offer him a list of options for admission.

Oxford is not only a University but also it is the largest research center, Oxford has more than a hundred libraries (the most extensive University library in England) and museums, its publishing house. Students have the opportunity to devote a large amount of their time to leisure — more than 300 interest groups are at their disposal. Traditionally, Oxford pays close attention to sport as a useful and prestigious form of recreation. From the walls of Oxford came a “pleiad” of brilliant figures of science, literature, art-here. Here taught Christopher Wren, John Tolkien, Lewis Carroll, studied Roger bacon and Margaret Thatcher. Oxford University an impact on culture.
