A semantic field is a deep linguistic structure which helps reveal the systematic organization of a language, i.e. a totality of language units related by a common semantic property.

The features of a semantic field

  • the complex hierarchial structure;

  • the system of various interconnected linguistic means;

  • the general common meaning of its parts;

  • the connection with other semantic fields.

The aim of the research is to sort out and describe the linguistic means that make up the lexico-semantic field of identity in the English language.

The category of identity is a notional category of language based on the comparison of qualities and properties of objects.

Identical – means «one and the same».

In logics and philosophy identity is defined as the category denoting equality, sameness or similarity of objects or phenomena.

The lexico-semantic field of identity comprises a complex of different units integrated by a common comparative meaning of equality or similarity of objects.

According to the structure a lexico-semantic field is traditionally divided into two unequal parts: the core and the periphery.

The core is the centre of the field and fully represents its semantics.

Let us turn to some examples:

1. Lyman wondered what this big, quiet man was thinking. Does he feel the same despair and frustration at the idea? (Knebel, 105).

2.“They are on the same bearing as the other ships.” (Forester (2), 55)

In these models identification concerns the identity of terms frustration and despair and bearing expressed by the adjective same.

The meaning of the word similar also implies identity.

Thus in model 3 missions and designations are identical in purpose.

3. There was no base near El Paso, and none with the ECOMCON designation or a similar mission (Knebel, 128).

A striking example of lexico-semantic fields border intersection is between the field of identifcation and the field of evaluation. For example:

4. «That’s exactly what I told him, Colonel» (Knebel, 39).

The integrity of two elements – the adverb exactly identifying the meaning of the subject word what corresponds to the subjective emotional evaluation.

The research has shown that there is quite a large stock of English language means for the semantics of identity.

The most frequently used units of this meaning are lexico-grammatical classes of adjectives, adverbs and nouns.
