Grand prince Georgy Vsevolodovich of Vladimir (1188-1238) a military commander, a peacemaker and a saint is he founder of Nizhny Novgorod. His life was full of military and peacetime feats in glorification of his Motherland. His extraordinary talent of a military commander and a warrior was combined with his diplomacy and political skills. Recalling the construction of the stone churches in the ancient Russia, the foundation of the cities, military deeds and the legend of the Great Kitezh city we remember the name of this outstanding person. The foundation of Nizhny Novgorod put the end of age-long war conflict over the lands with the Bulgars. The city is the only settlement in Russia founded by Prince Georgy and Bishop Simon of Vladimir, his faithful brother in spirit and a true friend. The grand prince was killed in a duel with Burundai (a Mongol commander) during the battle of the Sit River. He was canonized in the XVII th century. The icon of the saint was created approximately in 1645 and now exhibited in the Tretyakov`s Gallery. This icon was an upper plate of his shrine. The image was fairly imaginative because there were no images painted during the prince`s lifetime. The icons showing Georgy Vsevolodovich of Vladimir can be seen on the Dmitrievskaya tower of the Kremlin, in the Church of Assumption, on the façade and inside the Michael Archangel Cathedral.
