The Nizhegorodsky Art Museum has always considered being not only the repository of the art valuables. It performs multiple functions: storage, acquisition, study and popularization of pictorial arts. For its long history the museum has become an organic and indispensable part of cultural life of our city. The rich collection of the museum is well known to the great number of amateurs and connoisseurs of art. Its basis is compiled of works of…. Among the pieces of art which were handed over to the museum by Gorky the best are the canvases by N. Rerikh and B. Kustodiev. Special attention of art lovers is drawn to the picture «The Russian Venus» by B.M. Kustodiev. The great artist reflected life with the stormy pleasure and completeness. Looking at the picture exhibited at the Nizhny Novgorod Art Museum since 1936 you feel admiration. «The Russian Venus» stands on a wooden pedestal covered with puffs of hardly visible steam in an ordinary bathhouse. A basin filled with water, the soap foam in combination with the rosy skin and a flow of golden hair divided in two by her raised left hand and the clothes thrown by the young, smiling girl brings wonderful impression of abundant health and virgin cleanliness. It should be noted that nakedness of the merchant goddess is devoid of erotic aura and phycologism. The picture was created in the middle of the 20s of the XX th century. The artist`s daughter was the prototype of the girl in the Russian bathhouse. It was the last canvas of the great Kustodiev who sent his farewell to art and life.
