Do is a very common word in English. Have you noticed how often it is used and in how many different ways? First of all, it expresses the interrogative and negative forms of sentences both in the present. «Do you speak Japanese? » «I don`t like fatty foods. » And in the past: «Did he call you last week? » «We didn`t have a vacation in summer. » It is also used as an emphatic form, to stress the importance of what is being said: «Why didn`t you buy the tickets? » «But I did buy them. » «Do stop making such a mess».Do is always used in a lot of other colloquial expressions. For example, to do away with something is to abolish it. If you do out a room you clean it and tidy it up bit if you do up a room you decorate it. If you are done out of something you are cheated of it and then you could be called hard done by or badly treated. If you say that something will do, you mean that it will be sufficient or adequate for your purposes while to say that something is not done means that it is not a socially acceptable thing to do. A do is a party or an event, a to-do is a fuss anda do-gooder is a person who is too enthusiastic to help the others. Finally, don`t forget that when people are introduces for the first time they both say «How do you do?»
