Founded in the 16th century and moved from Makaryevsky monastery to Nizhny Novgorod in 1817, Nizhny Novgorod fair has been thriving for about a hundred years and there has been nothing of the kind either in Russia or in Western Europe. By the middle of 19th century its turnover made 60% of the total cost of the imported goods all over the Russian borders.
Makaryevskaya fair was a complex socio-economic organism. According to Agustin Betancourt project, the fair complex consisted of sixty separate constructions including over two thousand shops and forty outbuildings. The most interesting buildings are the main building complex in Baroque style, the main square, Chinese shopping arcade and water canal in the form of a horseshoe. Near the fair complex there is Spassky Starotarmarochny Cathedral built by a famous architect Monferran.
In the second part of the 18th century the fair was thriving. The greatest event in N. Novgorod fair was the All-Russian industrial and art exhibition in 1896. It was the largest exhibition in the Russian Empire. The exhibition demonstrated the best achievements of the industrial development of Russia and its inventions. For example, there was shown the first radio invented by Alexander Popov, the first Russian automobile and the world’s first hyperboloid steel tower-shell by Vladimir Shukhov.
After revolution, in 1918 Soviet government decided to join the fair to the city of Nizhny Novgorod. In 1929, the fair was closed, and the building of the main fair house became a shop.
The idea is to restore the tradition of holding fairs in Nizhny Novgorod region occurred in February 1990.
Only a few buildings of the old fair have been preserved. In 2015 near Alexander Nevsky square two fair pavilions were identified. All these years, these pavilions contained a unique metal construction from All-Russian industrial and art exhibition.
Today we have an idea of adapting these old pavilions to modern needs, to turn them into some sort of public space, using a foreign experience. This space will include several zones:
active recreation area
trading zone
food court
theater stage
historical and educational area
center of modern art
The city really needs public spaces, and this is another reason why we have come up with the idea of the reorganization of the Strelka area. Our project will also give resurgence to Strelka, which is not used anyway.
The main idea of our project can be shown in the following line: “We believe that people in the city should feel comfortable and the space reserved for the rest can really help them.”
We have introduced you rich history of Nizhny Novgorod Fair and told you about the All-Russian industrial and art exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod that took place here, and finally, we presented you some thoughts about reformation of Strelka space.
As a result it is important to note that only few of the residents know about the rich history of our city. Now the word “fair” is associated only with a single case, and it is wrong.
Our aim is to preserve the memory of the famous Makaryevskaya Fair of Nizhny Novgorod province, combining this idea with the idea of unused public spaces of the "Strelka". Let’s combine the rest with a retrospective journey into the history
