Many components of the EF substantive structural type peculiar normative education single and plural nouns according from single or multiple designated objects, phenomena, etc. .: an Aunt Salty (Aunt Sallys).; the black Maria (black Marias); a devil's advocate (devil's advocates); Jack Johnson (Jack Johnsons); a white elephant (white elephants).

Twice the building workers broke the police cordon and many men were bundled into black Marias. ( "Daily Worker")

In the part that deals with the economy of capitalism many of the main distortions and Aunt Sallys of anti-marxists are decisively dealt with. ( "Marxism Today")

Usually inflection plural noun decorated one, even if you have two nouns in FE.

We found ourselves regular knights of the road, before we knew where we were almost. (W. Thackeray)

However, there are cases where two nouns are plural.

You know that I am plain Roebuck Ramsden when other men who have done less have got handles to their names. (B. Shaw)

As part of EF with substantive subordination patterns are nouns used only in the plural, whereas these same nouns as separate tokens can be used both in singular and plural.

EF with nouns plural shares the following groups:

1. EF reflecting objectively existing plurality not allow individuality: birds of a feather, creature comforts; leaves without figs; the three (golden) balls; white caps (or horses).

2. EF traditionally designating only plurality, although objectively there is a singularity: dead marines (or men); the lungs of London; sheep without a shepherd.

3. EF, designated by the individual, which is alliance separate units: a month of Sundays; the nest of singing birds «nest songbirds" (nickname lyric poets Queen Elizabethan I).

Nouns month and nest, standing in the singular, is to limit a collective (cf.. Crew, company, board, team, etc.), So the words of birds and Sundays are plural. The use of words month and enter data FE plural impossible.

4. FE, designated by the individual, but the expression of a noun in the plural: donkey's years; long ears; palmy days «heyday, prosperity";

5. EF, designated by the individual, is closely associated with the multiplicity: a break in the clouds; the devil on two sticks; the law of the Medes and Persians Bible. "Law midyan and Persians", "immutable law"; new wine in old bottles; the observed of all observers.

6. FE indicating an incalculable notion associated closely with multiplicity: milk for babes.

Plural noun value is an important component of the literal meaning components, Pa basis of which arose phraseological turnover value (the flesh-pots of Egypt Bible., Bookstore. "Material wealth", "satisfaction", "rich life" (considered by whom or-or regret envy); the merry dancers, etc.)..

Plural noun also important value for the EF, which arose, avoiding phrases variable stage (angels or devils on horseback; the sinews of war, etc.).

Degrees of comparison

The change in the substantive adjective frazemah with subordination structure is relatively rare.

In many attributive-The combination of such a change is not possible, for example, in revolutions best man «the best man," "witness"; current coin of letters, "current coin"; "Common opinion"; the last straw, Queer Street and others.

However, in some substantive speed type adjective + noun adjectives can be used in the comparative and superlative degrees. Such use is already common in Dickens.

You are an older hand at this, than I thought you, Tupman. (Ch. Dickens)

This barber was one of Covalio's saddest dogs often remaining out of doors at eleven post meridiem. (O. Henry)
