His Variational Method of PU Study was a step forward in method of study of phraseological units. This method aims at the studying of real phraseological units in speech.

The peculiarities of this method are:

1) The tendency to use the provisions of the materialist dialectic in the consideration of linguistic phenomena and synthesize the position of traditional linguistics and methods of structural linguistics;

2) The comprehensive study of the characteristics of the components of phraseological units, allocation of phraseological level of linguistic structure;

3) The approach to phraseology as a system and studying of real variations of phraseological units that are observed in specific acts of communication in a certain historical period;

4) The allocation of the phraseological meaning as a special language category.

The advantages of this method must be noticed as they are seen here. L. Elsemov noticed some disadvantages of this method. Arkhangelskiy overindulges the system of dependencies that he takes as a basis of phraseological units. He underestimated the dialectic of the elements and structures. Also Archangelskiy hasn’t developed the procedures of the variational method of PU study.
