Phraseology - is the section of lexicology that studies the phraseological structure of language in its current state and historical development. According to A.V. Kunin, the phraseology is a treasure of language, since it reflects the history of the people, the uniqueness of its culture, way of life and worldview.

A.I. Smirnitsky has made a huge contribution to the development of phraseology as a science and created the classification of phraseological units. He distinguishes phraseological units and idioms in it. According to A.I. Smirnitsky, phraseological units, unlike idioms, are stylistically neutral phrases. In turn, the idioms are units with a figurative meaning based on the metaphor.

According to A.I. Smirnitsky, phraseological units counter the traditional phrases, idioms, and sentences which are included in the system of language, especially because they assimilate the whole word, although all their components are grammatically framed.

Characteristic features of phraseological units are their semantic integrity and reproducibility of speech. Reproducible combinations include traditional phrases, idioms, and sentences which are included in the system of language.

Depending on the number of significant words in modern English, A.I. Smirnitsky considers that it is possible to distinguish two structural-semantic types of phraseological units: unimodal and bimodal. Units that have only one semantically meaningful component are called unimodal, therefore, the units that have few or many components are called bimodal. In general, A.I. Smirnitsky played a prominent role in the history of Russian linguistics and made a great contribution to the study of phraseology as a science.
